The African Editors Forum (TAEF) has announced the event, scheduled for February 23-24, 2026, in Nairobi, Kenya. This gathering will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders, including editors-in-chief, media CEOs, national editors' societies, regulators, competition authorities, donors, digital rights groups, and technology companies. The theme, 'Reclaiming Value, Rebuilding Trust, Redefining Sustainability', highlights the need to address critical challenges in the industry.
The Congress will delve into the economic value of African journalism, exploring fair compensation models and using South Africa's landmark case as a reference point. It will also discuss the delicate balance between regulation and press freedom, aiming to produce a Continental Statement on Public-Interest Media Regulation. Key sessions will provide practical tools and frameworks, such as a Toolkit for Sustainable Editors' Societies, a concept for an Africa Journalism Fund governed by the continent, and a Support Framework for Small and Community Newsrooms, offering shared services, collaborative networks, and dedicated funding streams.
The event will culminate in public commitments from editors, regulators, funders, and tech platforms, setting the stage for the Africa Media Convention and the 2027 Africa Editors Congress. This Congress is a crucial step towards addressing the revenue crisis and trust deficit in African journalism, fostering a sustainable and trusted media environment.
