AHSAA Delays Fall Sports Reclassification to January 2026 Due to Choose Act Dispute (2026)

Get ready for a wild ride as we dive into the world of high school sports and a controversial decision that has everyone talking!

The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) has just dropped a bombshell, announcing a delay in their reclassification for fall sports. Originally scheduled for next week, the AHSAA has pushed the announcement back to January 23, 2026. But here's where it gets interesting...

Executive Director Heath Harmon cited "current mediation" as the reason for the postponement. This mediation stems from an ongoing dispute over athletic eligibility for Alabama's Choose Act students. Governor Kay Ivey and Alabama House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter are suing the AHSAA to challenge its rule that students transferring to private schools with CHOOSE Act funds must sit out a year before competing.

The AHSAA's longstanding rule aims to prevent private schools from gaining an unfair advantage through recruitment. However, Ivey and Ledbetter argue that the 2024 Choose Act clearly states that a student-athlete's eligibility should not be affected by these funds.

And this is the part most people miss: a restraining order is currently in place, allowing Choose Act students to play immediately. So, the AHSAA's reclassification process, which occurs every two years based on enrollment changes, is now in a state of flux.

Private schools are subject to a 1.35 multiplier for each student, and a competitive balance system can elevate specific sports teams based on their success. With the reclassification announcement postponed, fall sports coaches will have to wait at least another month to solidify their 2026 schedules.

In 2023, the fall reclassification was announced on December 18, so this delay is significant. The AHSAA includes 58 private school members, and Harmon met with representatives from these schools in Montgomery just a couple of months ago.

So, what does this mean for the future of high school sports in Alabama? Will the AHSAA's decision impact the competitive landscape? And how will this affect the students and athletes involved?

These are the questions we're left pondering. What are your thoughts? Do you think the AHSAA made the right call? Or is this a controversial move that will spark further debate? Let us know in the comments below!
