The music industry is experiencing a revolution as AI-generated songs flood the airwaves. One survey estimates 50,000 AI songs are uploaded daily to a major streaming service, and 97% of listeners can't tell them apart. While some producers embrace AI for its efficiency, others are wary of its potential to mimic artists without permission. AI-powered bands with quirky names like Burning Rust and Velvet Sundown are gaining traction, raising questions about the future of music creation.

For artists who rely on live performances and album sales, AI presents both challenges and opportunities. As AI tools democratize music production, some artists are grappling with existential concerns. The Hollywood Reporter, in collaboration with the Frost School of Music, conducted a national poll to gauge public opinion on AI music, streaming pay for artists, and listening habits.

AI's Impact and Public Perception

The poll reveals a divided America. Just over half of Americans are uninterested in AI music, even if their favorite artist creates it. Over 66% admit they've never listened to AI music. However, 32% are open to AI-generated tunes, a trend already reflected in Billboard charts.

Americans are particularly sensitive to AI creators using voices without permission. 62% of respondents believe AI music creators should get permission from original artists when replicating their voices. Interestingly, there's no significant political divide on this issue.

Generational and Political Differences

Generational differences are evident. GenZers are more accepting of AI-generated music without human input, while Baby Boomers prioritize paying original artists when AI mimics their work. Political affiliations also play a role, but the overall majority in every age group remains skeptical of AI songs without human musical contributions.

Artist Pay and Streaming Economics

The music industry's economic model is under scrutiny. While free streaming has benefited major labels, it hasn't been kind to non-star artists. Movements like the 'Living Wage for Musicians Act' aim to increase per-stream pay, but mainstream awareness is still lacking.

The poll shows a plurality of Americans believes artists are generally paid fairly by streaming services and concerts. However, GenZers are willing to pay more for concerts or streaming if they know the money goes directly to artists.

Listening Habits and Music Discovery

Rock is America's favorite music genre, according to the survey. Listening habits vary by age and political affiliation. GenZers and Millennials favor Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music, while Boomers lean towards SiriusXM, Amazon Music, and FM radio.

Music discovery methods are evolving. Streaming service suggestions and background music are the top discoverers, followed by social media. Surprisingly, only 7% of Americans find new songs through music critics or blogs.

A Silver Lining: Music Education

Despite AI's disruption, the poll highlights a positive trend. GenZers are the most likely generation to have learned a real-life instrument, with 67% having picked up an instrument. This contrasts with GenXers, who are the least likely to have learned an instrument, reflecting the decline in music education funding during their school years.
