Scientists have unearthed a 326-million-year-old car-sized millipede fossil, a remarkable discovery that challenges our understanding of prehistoric life. This ancient creature, known as Arthropleura, once roamed the Earth, stretching nearly nine feet in length. Preserved in a sandstone boulder, it's the largest land invertebrate ever found, dating back to the Carboniferous period, long before dinosaurs. The fossil's discovery in Howick Bay, Northumberland, was a complete fluke, as it was exposed after a cliff collapse. The fossil measures 75 centimeters, but it's just a part of the animal, likely a shed exoskeleton. Based on scale comparisons, the full creature is estimated to have been the size of a compact car. These prehistoric giants crawled across tropical landscapes, which were once near the equator in Great Britain. Unlike earlier finds, this fossil is the most complete and largest of its kind, preserved in a fossilized river channel, not coal swamps. This suggests Arthropleura thrived in open woodlands near ancient waterways, feeding on decaying vegetation and small invertebrates. The discovery challenges the idea that high atmospheric oxygen drove their gigantism, as the fossil dates from a time with lower oxygen levels. Instead, factors like abundant plant-based nutrition, a lack of terrestrial predators, and stable equatorial climates are likely contributors. A 2024 study further supports this, revealing the head structure of juvenile Arthropleura fossils, placing them in a group that shares features with both millipedes and centipedes. Despite their dominance, Arthropleura vanished during the early Permian period due to climate shifts and the rise of early reptiles. The fossil's display at the Sedgwick Museum offers a glimpse into a world of giant invertebrates, challenging our understanding of ancient ecosystems and the evolutionary surprises they held.
