The Long Trail: A Day of Adventure and Unexpected Twists
The sun rises, and so does my excitement as I embark on the Pine Cobble Trail, eager to explore the renowned Long Trail. The journey begins with a hearty breakfast, fueling my body for the challenges ahead. As we drive towards the trailhead, a family of turkeys greets us, setting a positive tone for the day.
The Pine Cobble Approach is a beautiful introduction to the trail's characteristics: roots, elevation, and breathtaking views. I'm particularly thrilled to spot the iconic southern Long Trail marker, a symbol of the adventure that awaits. With my bag checked and Steph by my side, we share a pizza, play an uplifting song, and exchange heartfelt goodbyes.
The trail unfolds with a mix of rocks and roots, leading us to several beaverponds. The blazing sun adds a touch of warmth, but I quickly find my rhythm as the trail meanders into the woods. My original plan was to reach Congdon Shelter, the second shelter along the way. However, a large stream catches my attention, and I decide to refill my bottles, ensuring I'm well-prepared for the journey ahead.
As I approach Congdon Shelter, I realize the day is far from over. The trail takes an unexpected turn, leading me to Harmon Hill, where I witness the approaching storms and the sound of rain on leaves. I embrace the challenge, thinking, 'Well, I'm kind of in it now!'
The trail then presents a steep and rocky descent towards Route 9. I navigate the slippery path with caution, my legs feeling rubbery as I approach the road. The trail on the other side is equally challenging but offers a sense of relief. I push forward, determined to reach the shelter before sunset.
Time is ticking, and the shelter seems elusive. I spot a dirt road and consider pitching my tent, but a quick check reveals I'm just a quarter mile away from Melville Shelter. Exhausted but determined, I arrive at my destination, roll out my pad, and call it a day. I fall asleep content, grateful for the adventure and the memories made.
This day on the Long Trail was a testament to the unexpected twists and turns that make outdoor adventures so captivating. It's a reminder that nature's beauty and challenges are intertwined, and embracing them is what makes the journey truly special.
