Hold on to your hats, space enthusiasts! An interstellar visitor, known as 3I/ATLAS, is making its way towards Earth, coming closer than you might imagine. This cosmic traveler, currently less than 300 million km away, is drawing near, and the story behind it is fascinating.
On the morning of November 23rd, 2025, 3I/ATLAS began its approach. According to reports from the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the IKI RAS and the ISZF SB RAS, the comet is shrinking the distance to our planet by about two million km each day. The scientists explain that Earth's own movement is a significant factor in this close encounter, as the comet's trajectory aligns with our planet's path.
But here's where it gets interesting: even as 3I/ATLAS gets closer to us, it's actually on its way out of our solar system, relative to its journey around the Sun. It's a fleeting visit!
3I/ATLAS holds a special place in astronomical history. It's only the third interstellar object ever spotted by astronomers. The first was the asteroid Oumuamua, discovered in the fall of 2017. The second was the comet 2I/Borisov, which Russian astronomer Gennady Borisov detected in August 2019.
Scientists predict that 3I/ATLAS will reach its closest point to Earth on December 19, 2025, at a distance of approximately 269 million km. After this, the comet will begin its journey away from us. The good news? Experts confirm that 3I/ATLAS poses no threat to our planet.
