A major measles scare has hit Brandon and southern Manitoba, with public health officials issuing a warning to thousands of potential exposures. The focus of concern is Manitoba Ag Days, a large-scale indoor farm show that attracted a massive crowd.
But here's where it gets controversial... The event, held from January 20 to 22, saw an estimated 35,000 visitors, creating a potential breeding ground for the highly contagious measles virus. With close to 600 exhibitors and a vast 540,000 square feet of show space, the risk of exposure was significant.
Manitoba Health officials are urging anyone who attended Ag Days, as well as those who visited hotels, restaurants, and shops in the area, to monitor for symptoms until February 13. The potential exposure dates and locations are extensive, including the Keystone Centre, the Agriculture in the Classroom sessions, and various other sites in Brandon.
And this is the part most people miss... The risk of exposure extends beyond the event days themselves. Officials are advising that possible exposures may have occurred in the city on the days leading up to and following the event, creating a wider window of concern.
Measles symptoms can appear anywhere from seven to 21 days after exposure, and include a range of telltale signs such as fever, runny nose, drowsiness, irritability, red eyes, and small white spots inside the mouth or throat. A distinctive red, blotchy rash often develops several days later. Complications can be severe, including ear infections, diarrhea, pneumonia, and encephalitis.
So, what can you do to protect yourself? Manitoba Health officials emphasize the importance of immunization, as measles is highly contagious and can spread through coughing and sneezing. They recommend vaccination for anyone born in 1970 or later who has not had measles or the vaccine. Certain high-risk groups, including infants, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems, should seek medical advice for potential preventative treatment within six days of exposure.
The situation is evolving, with measles cases continuing to rise. Manitoba has recorded its largest monthly surge since the outbreak began in early 2025, with 74 confirmed cases in January alone. The total number of confirmed cases now stands at 393, with an additional 37 probable cases since February of last year.
Additional exposures have also been reported in southern Manitoba, including the Stacked Pancake and Breakfast House in Winkler and the Boundary Trails Health Centre.
If you develop symptoms, it's crucial to isolate at home and contact your healthcare provider, informing them of the potential exposure. Close contacts may also need to isolate and consider vaccination. Health officials advise calling ahead to clinics to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.
