Military Families Get a Christmas Present: 1,000 Homes Upgraded in Time for the Holidays
The UK's military families are in for a treat this Christmas as the government has completed its pledge to transform the 1,000 worst homes ahead of schedule. This ambitious project, known as the Consumer Charter, aims to provide safe and decent homes for the Armed Forces and their families.
But there's more to this story. The program has been extended, with an additional 250 military properties set to receive priority upgrades by spring, surpassing the initial target by 25%. This significant increase in the number of homes to be upgraded is a testament to the government's commitment to the Defence Housing Strategy, a generational renewal of military housing.
The Raising the Minimum Standards initiative has seen extensive work at service family homes across the UK. In England, over 700 properties have been upgraded, with notable projects in Wiltshire and Windsor, Bassingbourn, Swanton Morely, Woodbridge, and Uxbridge. These improvements include new flooring, reliable heating systems, repaired leaky roofs, and modern bathrooms, kitchens, windows, and doors.
This is just the beginning of a ten-year, £9 billion investment plan to modernize, refurbish, or rebuild over 40,000 service family homes. The landmark deal to bring 36,000 military homes back into public ownership has made this possible. Defence Secretary John Healey MP emphasizes the importance of providing safe and decent homes for the Armed Forces, stating, 'The least they deserve are safe and decent homes.'
Cpl Jack Crean and his family, including his partner Nina and their one-year-old son Charlie, have moved into a newly refurbished home at Bassingbourn Barracks in Cambridgeshire. Cpl Crean expressed his happiness, noting the positive impact on his family's well-being and the peace of mind that comes with living in a modern, clean house.
David Brewer, Chief Operating Officer for the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, highlights the progress made, stating, 'This is just the start of a generational renewal.' The organization is committed to improving 9 out of 10 homes and ensuring the Armed Forces receive the quality housing they deserve.
The Consumer Charter commitments, including robust standards and personalized home policies, are on track to be achieved by the end of the year. Monthly surveys of Service personnel show a rising satisfaction trend, indicating the success of these improvements. This initiative is a significant step towards ending decades of neglect and providing the dedicated Armed Forces families with the homes they deserve.
