A shocking act of violence has left a dedicated shop owner severely injured after he bravely confronted shoplifters.
Peter Darke, a resilient entrepreneur who has poured 43 years of his life into his bicycle store, Darke Cycles, in Sunderland, experienced the most harrowing incident of his career. The 65-year-old, who first opened his doors after being made redundant at the young age of 19, was brutally assaulted by two individuals. This wasn't just a minor scuffle; Peter sustained broken ribs, a fractured nose, and lacerations to his eye, ear, and lip. The ordeal unfolded when he refused to let two men, suspected of being under the influence, leave his shop with an £80 motorcycle helmet.
It was a seemingly ordinary Tuesday afternoon, around 4 PM on January 20th, when the two men, estimated to be in their 20s, entered Darke Cycles. Peter, who was in a different part of the store, noticed one of the men stumbling as he entered, immediately raising his suspicions. Their behaviour grew more concerning as they moved towards the motorcycle display. One of the men even attempted to lift a motorbike, nearly losing his balance, which further solidified Peter's belief that they were "up to no good."
"I thought I'm not going to let this kid get away with pinching a helmet," Peter recounted, highlighting his determination to prevent theft. He decided to ask the men to leave. Initially, the interaction was verbal, with Peter and a customer attempting to guide the men out. However, as one of the suspects neared the exit, he snatched an £80 helmet and fled. Peter, knowing the individual's unsteady state, pursued them, believing they wouldn't get far.
But here's where it gets controversial... Peter's pursuit led him outside the shop, where the situation escalated dramatically. A bystander captured the incident on video, which later surfaced on TikTok. The footage shows the second man running towards Peter and the initial shoplifter, and then the brutal attack commenced on Peter in the street.
Reflecting on his actions, Peter acknowledged that some might question his decision to pursue the shoplifters. "In hindsight some might say you shouldn't have pursued the shoplifters. But then are you just supposed to let them take what they want? When it's your own business it makes a big difference." He firmly believes that such behaviour should not be tolerated, stating, "People shouldn't be able to get away with it."
