The Alien saga continues to evolve, and the potential return of Ellen Ripley is generating buzz! After all these years, the iconic Sigourney Weaver might be stepping back into Ripley's shoes, but this time, things are poised to be very different.
A decade ago, fans were excited about Neill Blomkamp's vision for Alien 5, which would have ignored the events of Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection, bringing Ripley back. However, the project was shelved while Ridley Scott worked on Alien: Covenant. Now, the legendary Walter Hill, a key figure in the Alien franchise since its inception, has penned a 50-page treatment for a new sequel.
Weaver herself seems intrigued. Initially hesitant about revisiting the role, she's now open to the idea, especially after reading Hill's initial work. She has hinted that Hill's script offers a fresh perspective, possibly exploring how Ripley's experiences might be perceived or sidelined in the future. Weaver has described the script as "very strong" and "quite extraordinary."
But here's where it gets controversial...
Hill's treatment proposes a story that departs from the familiar chase-and-fight scenarios of the original films. Weaver has stated that the new story will be unlike what we've seen before, moving away from the claustrophobic airshaft chases.
The script explores the idea of a society that might try to contain someone who has tried to help mankind. Weaver has also hinted that Ripley's age could be around 200 years old.
And this is the part most people miss...
Hill's involvement in the Alien franchise is extensive. He has been a producer on every installment, co-wrote Aliens, and worked on the screenplay for Alien 3.
Weaver also shared her thoughts on Blomkamp's abandoned project, stating that Ridley Scott's focus on prequels ultimately led to its demise. She also expressed her enthusiasm for the Alien: Earth TV series, finding it remarkable and relevant to our world.
